Dr. Mark Friend
Dr. Mark Friend is a Certified Safety Professional (CSP) and a professional member of the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE). Friend has over thirty years of experience in higher education, having taught at six institutions of higher learning. He serves as Professor and Chair of the Department of Applied Aviation Sciences at Embry-Riddle University in Daytona Beach, Florida. Prior to that, he was Professor of Safety and Director of the Center for Applied Technology at East Carolina University. He also served as Chair of the Department of Occupational Safety and Health at Murray State University after teaching at West Virginia University, Fairmont State University, and Waynesburg College. His text, Fundamentals of Occupational Safety and Health, a top-selling book in the field, is currently in its fourth edition. Friend serves on the editorial board of Occupational Hazards and has published several articles in safety and safety management. He is active as a consultant, speaker, expert witness, and trainer in the field of safety management. He was given the Charles V. Culbertson Outstanding Service Award by the American Society of Safety Engineers at the 2005 Professional Development Conference. Friend received the 2003 PPG Safety Educator of the Year award from ASSE, The West Virginia University/National Safety Management Society Achievement Award, and is listed in Who’s Who in America, and Who’s Who in American Education. Friend recently received the Academics Practice Specialty Safety Professional of the Year 2006-2007 award from the American Society of Safety Engineers.
